The nation-states of the world are funneling money into investment vehicles and targeting key investments in the global capital markets. Corporate equities.  Sovereign and private debt offerings (fixed-income).  Private equity.  Hedge funds. Indexes. Derivatives. Even buying entire companies, units of companies (spin offs) and product lines. Commodities.  Real estate.  All are part of the mix of interest to Sovereign Wealth Funds.   Think of these investment vehicles as sovereign or state owned entities, investment pools, that are organized in various ways to invest the surplus funds (those not needed internally) externally for the benefit of the home nation-state.  More than half of the Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are resource-based – with primarily oil and gas revenues fueling the investment pool.  

The sample presented is one of the best-known funds, that of Abu Dhabi, part of the United Arab Emirates of the Gulf region.  The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) had as much as USD$875 billion in assets managed in mid-year 2008.  The profiles in the SWF Category include:  Fund overview, structure, investment basics, investment strategies, and other features.
